Switzerland gives you something increasingly rare: options

You do not have to move to a tax haven, a tropical island or the other side of the world to change the rules around your life.

Orientation

Everything your country promised to be, Switzerland still is.

Switzerland sits in the middle of Europe, but runs on its own currency, its own tax system, its own immigration law and a political culture built around cantons, communes and direct votes. It is safe, wealthy, internationally connected and still small enough for the place you choose to live to matter.

For some people, Switzerland is a tax move. For others it is about schools, safety, banking, political stability or simply wanting a country that still feels manageable. For many, it is all of those things at once.

The attraction is not that Switzerland is perfect. It is that you can choose a canton, a commune, a permit route, a bank and a structure that fit the life you actually want.

What Switzerland is deciding right now

All news

Why Switzerland

Switzerland is not a loophole and it is not a postcard.

Your address becomes a decision again

The Confederation, 26 cantons and more than two thousand communes each hold real authority. Not consultative authority. Real authority, over tax rates, schools, building rules, policing and a long list of things that decide what your Tuesday looks like.

Four times a year, the state has to ask

Swiss citizens vote on substance, not just on personnel. Roughly four federal voting dates a year, plus cantonal and communal ballots on top.

A currency that answers to a country

The franc is not a promise and nobody at the Swiss National Bank will make you one. It is a currency issued by a small, solvent, politically coherent state whose central bank has a legal mandate to keep prices stable and defines that as inflation under two percent a year.

Low tax is the wrong headline. Competition is the story.

Switzerland is not tax-free and anybody selling it to you that way is selling you something else as well. There is federal income tax, cantonal and communal income tax, an annual wealth tax on worldwide net assets, social security contributions, VAT and property taxes.

Banking that outlived its own myth

Swiss banking secrecy in the sense the movies mean is finished. Automatic exchange of information and FATCA ended it.

Safety is not a lifestyle feature. It is compound interest.

Clean streets and punctual trains sound like a cliché right up to the moment you build a family around them. Then they become the reason your teenager takes the last train home and you go to sleep.

Now the part nobody puts in the brochure

Switzerland will take your money and it will not apologise. Housing in Zurich, Zug and Geneva is brutal. You will compete for apartments with a folder of documents and a letter explaining yourself.

Why Move to Switzerland?

Residence

First question: do you have free movement rights?

This is the dividing line of the entire move. If you are an EU or EFTA citizen, the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons gives you a comparatively straightforward route. Before you choose Zug, Zurich or Lake Geneva, establish which immigration door is actually open to you.

Tax

Then choose the canton, not just the country

Switzerland is one country with 26 tax systems layered beneath federal tax. Two addresses a short drive apart can produce materially different annual tax bills. The right question is not, “Which canton has the lowest tax rate?” It is: “Which canton produces the best total result for my income, assets, family and life?”

Banking

Bring your money with the same care as your furniture

A move to Switzerland changes the status of your bank accounts and brokerage relationships. Some foreign brokers do not accept Swiss residents. A custody transfer is usually cleaner than selling everything simply because you moved.

Banking in Switzerland After You Move

Company

Your company can move with you, sometimes even when you do not intend it to

Founders need to treat personal residence and corporate residence as separate questions. A foreign company can become Swiss tax resident if its effective management moves to Switzerland. A GmbH requires CHF 20,000 fully paid-in capital.

Wealth

Switzerland taxes wealth as well as income

This surprises many newcomers. There is no federal wealth tax, but cantons and communes levy annual wealth tax on net assets. At the same time, private capital gains on movable assets are generally tax-free if you remain a private investor rather than being classified as a professional securities trader.

Living

Life is the point of the move

The permit, tax ruling and bank account are only infrastructure. You still need an apartment, health insurance, schools, childcare, a doctor and a routine. Switzerland is expensive, and its housing market is particularly tight in places such as Zurich, Zug and Geneva.

Guides

The Swiss rules are only half of an international move

Two people can move into the same apartment in Switzerland and face completely different consequences because of the country and passport they bring with them.

What I learned

I have made this move before

Sebastian Sauerborn

In 2000 I left Germany for Switzerland and spent several years living in Freienbach.

The rules, tax rates and banking world have changed since then. The psychology of moving countries has not.

At first, Switzerland exists as a spreadsheet: tax rates, rent, salary, permit, health insurance. Then one day it becomes ordinary life. You need a key, an address, a bank card, a doctor and people you know.
